American College Focus is an educational television series which addresses the entire college admissions and selection process. Endorsed by the American Counseling Association and the New York Counseling Association, its purpose is to inform prospective college applicants about the college choice and selection process. The crucial roles of both the school counselor and the college admissions counselor in this process are emphasized. Dr. McGowan addresses general topics such as college survival and financial aid,as well as profiling colleges from throughout the nation. College presidents, deans of admission, and college students are interviewed and video clips of the colleges are incorporated into the program. Duplication and distribution to educational, PBS, and cable channels throughout NY and parts of New England were made possible by a grant from the Counseling and Human Development Foundation.
Andrew Scott McGowan, Ph.D. is a professor of education in the graduate program in Counseling and Development, School of Education, C.W. Post Campus, Long Island University, and Coordinator of LIU's M.S. degree program at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. He is editor of The Journal of Humanistic Education and Development, past editor of The Journal for the Professional Counselor, and is presently Chair of the Council of American Counseling Association Editors. Dr. McGowan has served in numerous leadership roles in the professional counseling associations. Professor McGowan is the 1994 recipient of the Patterson Award for Distinguished Professional Service in the Counseling Profession, the 1996 University of Scranton O'Hara Award in education, a 1996 Fordham University Award for excellence in education, and a 1996 American Counseling Association Distinguished Counselor.
