TELEVISION PRODUCTION MAGNET PROGRAM:

 

The Television Production Magnet Program located at Roosevelt High School is a nationally recognized program designed to give interested and committed students an opportunity to take courses in Television Production, as well as providing them with the opportunity for work experience in an actual television station and in field internships at major broadcast studios.

Students who are enrolled in the program can receive a five credit occupational Regents sequence, thereby allowing them to meet one of two sequences required for a New York State Regents Diploma. In addition, students in their senior year may receive up to five college credits towards a Bachelor of Science or Art degree in Communications.The level of student success is directly related to a student's interest and willingness to commit time and effort in this program. All students are greatly encouraged to apply for post high school education as part of their career development, thereby increasing their employment opportunities.

FACULTY

Gene Fiorot, Department Chairman and Station Director

Mr. Gene Fiorot has taught in the Yonkers Public Schools system for the past twenty eight years. He has been credited with implementing media programs on all grade levels in the Yonkers Public Schools. He has introduced a wide variety of media and communication systems to the school district. His titles as District Media Specialist and Station Director for Channel 25 has led to success in both program areas.

Mr. Fiorot has gained national attention for the Television Production Magnet Program at Roosevelt and WDMC TV the district's Educational Access Channel. Through his efforts the television station has built affiliations with Cable News Network, National Association of College Broadcasters, and the Public Broadcasting Service. He has worked as a consultant, producer, director and engineer for public and private institutions.

He has been nominated as Outstanding Occupational Teacher in New York State and has been awarded the Jenkins Memorial Award and Occupational Teacher of the Year for 1990. Mr. Fiorot was educated at Oswego State, City University of New York, Fordham University, and Antioch University. His degrees include a Bachelor of Science, Masters of Media Fine Arts, and a ProfessionalDiploma in Educational Administration. Mr. Fiorot has received additional credit from Lesley College in Massachusetts and Pace University in educational technology.He was appointed to the rank of Associate Professor at Iona College in the Radio and Television Department and has served on the Board of Directors of the New York State Media Arts Teachers Association.

 

Joseph Colontino, Instructor and Programming Director

Mr. Colontino has taught in the Yonkers Public Schools for the past twenty five years. He has taught at Roosevelt High School for the past twelve years. Mr. Colontino, during his tenure in the Television Production Magnet Program, has been responsible for critical curriculum components in the development and success of the program. He is responsible for the CNN Newsource program and his expertise has developed the use of satellite programming, distance learning activities and program scheduling.

In addition Mr. Colontino has worked as a professional videographer, photographer and actor. He has worked for major public and private corporations in medical and insurance related areas. He holds degrees from the State of New York College at Oswego and has received additional post graduate credit from the City University of New York. Mr. Colontino was appointed to the faculty of Iona College as an assistant professor in the Radio and Television Department.

 

Frank Leonetti, Instructor

Mr. Leonetti is a tenured teacher in the Yonkers Public Schools and has been a staff member in the Television Production Magnet program for the past eight years. His initial work at the Micro Society School Nineteen in the Video Communications Department gained the program national attention. He has developed an elementary media arts curriculum and has an expertise in distance learning technology.

Since his appointment to the Roosevelt High School Television Production program, he has helped to develop the curriculum for freshman and sophomores. Mr.Leonetti has written, compiled and edited the textbook used for the Television Production One component. His responsibilities include the supervising of student sports and music productions for the Board of Education's Channel Nineteen.

He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from City College and a Masters from Lehman College. An accomplished musician and recording engineer, he has worked professionally in the recording and video industries.

 

Anne Marie Leone, Instructor

Anne Marie Leone holds a Bachelor's degree in Spanish from Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, New York, a Master of Arts in Teaching Spanish from the State University of New York at Binghamton, New York, and post graduate work at the University of Valencia (Spain), University of Guadalajarra (Mexico), University of Hartford (CT), Emmanuel College (MA), Marymount College (NY), Iona College (NY), Jesus College of Cambridge University (England), Goddard College (VT), Rochester Institute of Technology (NY), State University of New York at Purchase and City University of New York.

Ms. Leone is certified in Spanish, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Commercial Photography. For the past 24 years she has taught courses in ESL, Spanish, and Bilingual Education in the Yonkers Public Schools. In addition Ms. Leone is a media instructor at Roosevelt High School with special emphasis on photography and video courses for Limited English Proficient students. Ms. Leone is a freelance photojournalist and videographer. She has been director of photography for Women's News, staff photographer for The Enterprise, and contributing writer/photographer for Westchester Magazine. At Roosevelt High School she has directed "State of the Art" a popular cable television series about art and artists.

A Dobbs Ferry, New York resident, she travels extensively for business and pleasure. Ms. Leone's recent photographic series, DOWN UNDER, the result of a photo shoot that took Ms. Leone from cosmopolitan Sydney to the primitive Outback, captures the exotic landscape,"seanery," and spirit of adventure of Australia, the new "Land of Oz.";

Television Production Level I

Introduction to Television Production and Journalism.

Description Overview: This course is designed to introduce the basic principles and techniques along with beginning to develop skills to be used as a foundation for more advanced work in subsequent television production courses. By focusing on the following areas; introduction to journalistic writing skills, basic television new production skills, and occupational roles, students will develop all phases of simple entry level television communications skills

Given instruction, examples and discussion the student will be able to recall the History of Broadcasting with a degree of accuracy acceptable to the instructor. In order to do this the student must be able to:* demonstrate and use the vocabulary of broadcast news occupations.* explain the contributions made by key historical individuals.* recall the impact made by technological advancements and their impact on the industry.* explain the role of mass media and television on today's society and culture.

Given instruction, examples, and discussion the student will be able to conduct an interview for a television news production with a degree of accuracy acceptable to the instructor. In order to do this the student must be able to:* recognize a newsworthy interview.* formulate and write questions that apply the techniques of broadcast writing.* make editing decisions.* operate a computer and use appropriate software and keyboard skills.

Given instruction, examples, and discussion, the student will conduct an interview production with a degree of accuracy acceptable to the instructor. TVP 200 Continued...Television Production Component

Given instruction and discussion the student will demonstrate expertise and knowledge with television equipment systems with a degree of accuracy acceptable to the instructor. In order to do this the student must be able to:* utilize learned occupational vocabulary.* demonstrate ability to use and understand equipment manuals.* follow procedures outlined by the instructor.* apply flow charts and simple schematics.

Given instruction and discussion the student will produce a single camera television production with a degree of accuracy acceptable to the instructor. In order to do this the student must be able to :* make preproduction and production plans.* set up and operate camcorder.* demonstrate knowledge of camera operating functions.* utilize picture composition skills.

Given instruction and discussion the student will produce computer graphics with a degree of accuracy acceptable to the instructor. In order to do this the student must be able to:* utilize computer literacy skills.* demonstrate ability to use and understand computer software manuals.* formulate appropriate graphic design.

Given instruction, examples and discussion the student will be able to edit a videotape production with a degree of accuracy acceptable to the instructor. To do this the student must be able to:* utilize equipment operation skills.* apply appropriate editing skills.* demonstrate timing and pacing techniques.* recognize the characteristics of visual imagery.* make editing decisions.

Course: Television Production

Prerequisite: A. Achieved tenth grade ranking. B. Successful completion of TVP200 Introduction to Television Production and Journalism Practices.

Corequisite: Tenth Grade English for Journalism (regents)

Description/Overview:This course is designed to further students' knowledge obtained in the introduction to television communications covered in Course TVP 200. By concentrating on lectures, demonstrations and handson experience, measurable occupational skills will be acquired. The successful completion of quarterly projects are a major component of the course. These projects focus on various television production activities which require utilizing camera and production techniques, computer concepts and writing abilities. In addition, students will explore occupational roles, communication theories, and the history of television.

Competencies:

Given instruction, examples and discussion the student will develop storyboards and scripts with a degree of accuracy and competency acceptable to the instructor. In order to do this the student must be able to:* Recognize a newsworthy story.* Interpret and utilize necessary data.* Apply techniques of acceptable writing.

Given instruction, examples and discussion the student will administer a production assignment with a degree of accuracy acceptable to the instructor. In order to do this the student must be able to:* Organize crews to handle specific jobs.* Oversee production development.* Make necessary changes where applicable.

Given the assignment to edit a master tape, the student will be able to perform postproduction techniques with a degree of competency and proficiency acceptable to the instructor. In order to do this the students must be able to:* Utilize editing skills.* Produce graphics using the computer.* Apply music and sound effect concepts.

Given instruction, examples and discussion the student will produce broadcast quality graphics using the computer with a degree of accuracy acceptable to the instructor.

In order to do this the student must be able to:* Operate appropriate computer software.* Distinguish acceptable colors for broadcast.* Make decisions regarding creativity.


CODE: TVP305 Course: Television News Production

Prerequisite:

A. Successful completion of TVP300 Television Production.

B. Achieved eleventh grade ranking

Description/Overview: This course is designed to further the techniques and development of skills learned in, Course TVP300 Television Production by concentrating in the following areas: Electronic News Gathering, Television News Studio operations/ responsibilities, and journalism/television practices of editing and story preparation. The course will emphasize, news organization, editing processes, ethics of journalism and studio news production operations. Students will be involved in hands on preparation of news productions and experience, by performing, a variety of occupational roles for the duration of the course.

Competencies:

Given instruction, examples, and discussion; the student will write news scripts with a degree of accuracy acceptable to the instructor. The student must be able to:* Recognize a story that is newsworthy.* Interpret and utilize data that is ethical and valid.* Apply techniques of writing for television broadcasts that meet industry and occupational standards.

Given instruction, examples, and discussion the student will prepare and produce a news story for telecast on Channel 25 with a degree of accuracy acceptable to the instructor. In order to do this the student must:* Select and organize a staff to select newsworthy stories.* Organize a staff to research information and data.* Establish job assignments for crews.* Oversee the production of news broadcasts.

Given instruction, examples and discussion the student will be able to perform pre and post production operations to produce a news broadcast with a degree and accuracy acceptable to the instructor. In order to do this the student must be able to:* Interpret and utilize CNN Newsource video and data.* Apply editing skills.* Produce copy and scripts using a computer* Produce computer news graphics.* Oversee production

Course: Television Station Internship

Prerequisite:

A. Successful completion of TVP305 Television Production.

B. Achieved eleventh grade ranking

Description/Overview: This course is designed to apply the techniques and development of skills learned in, Course TVP305 Television Production by utilizing skills in the following areas: Electronic News Gathering, Television News Studio operations/ responsibilities, and journalism/television practices of television station management. The course will emphasize, work place organization and management, editing assignments,studio/news production operations and leadership roles. Students will be involved in productions and experience, by performing, a variety of occupational roles for the duration of the course.

Competencies:

Given the responsibility for a television station's daily operation, the intern will perform this task to a level which is satisfactory to the instructor. In order to do this the student must be able to:* Complete a daily assigned task.* Organize and develop an special interest area.* Be responsible for departmental assignments.* Research new occupational areas of personal interest.* Identify personal strengths and weaknesses.

Given the necessary resources and personnel required for a major station operation, the intern will assume a leadership role and be responsible for this operation to the satisfaction of the instructor. In order to do this the student must be able to:* Develop occupational skills and expertise.* Utilize training skills to transfer knowledge.* Apply human resource skills to deal with others.* Evaluate job performance of self and others.

Major Goals:A. Students will be able to perform an assigned role in a Television Station Organization.B. Students will have supervisory duties for departments and areas, where they perform using their skills in organizing crews, supervising productions and evaluating others.C. Students will use this internship as a culminating activity in producing a major Channel 25 production.D. Students will develop training and learning activities forstudents in the level one and two classes.
